The newest deal signed elsewhere in the NFL should have one of the Miami Dolphins’ best players seeing dollar signs
The latest signing elsewhere across the NFL is good news for Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks.
The next step of the Miami Dolphins‘ offseason could go in a number of different directions. In just one week, the team will see about $20 million in salary cap space come their way as Bradley Chubb’s spring release is formally processed as a Post-June 1st cut.
That could set the stage for the team to sign their rookies to contracts expeditiously. Or, alternatively, it could open the door for a fresh contract extension for one of their other building blocks. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks is one to watch. But at the end of this past week, there was a new datapoint that could help steer that conversation. The Detroit Lions’ extension with LB Jack Campbell should be of interest to both Brooks and the Dolphins.
Detroit’s Jack Campbell extension is good news for Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks

Jack Campbell signed a four-year contract extension with the Lions worth a total of $81 million across four seasons on Thursday. The $20.25M annual average of the deal ranks second-highest among off-ball linebackers in the league — trailing only San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner. It marks the second big off-ball linebacker contract extension of the offseason, pairing with Houston’s Azeez Al-Shaair to give Brooks a pretty narrow range to negotiate.
The Al-Shaair contract averaged $18 million per season. Brooks has a legitimate argument to rank above that dollar amount — Brooks was an All-Pro while Al-Shaair was a Pro Bowler.
Jack Campbell was both. And so that should help steer the direction of the fine print of any contract negotiations being held with the Dolphins. Al-Shaair: Pro Bowl, no All Pro. Brooks: no Pro Bowl, All-Pro. Campbell: Pro Bowl and All-Pro. Easy enough…let’s make the numbers for the Miami Dolphins fall between the two averages posted in the last month and get down to business.
The Miami Dolphins certainly have the money long-term. And Brooks is certainly worth it. He’s proving his leadership daily as OTAs unfold — Brooks is unwavering in his commitment to leading by example and being present for his team despite the lingering contract questions. And with no more evident contract extensions looming, all worthwhile data appears to be in. It’s good news for Brooks.
