The top of the running back market is something the Miami Dolphins have, presumably, had their eyes on recently.

Miami is reportedly interested in hammering out a contract extension with star running back De’Von Achane. It’s a move that would make him the unquestioned centerpiece of a new-look skill group in South Florida. But the Dolphins’ efforts to strike an extension did not yield the first big domino. That honor belongs to Breece Hall and the New York Jets — and the development is relevant for Miami.

Hall has agreed to terms on a three-year, $45.75 million contract extension with the Jets. It was the final bit of news to end this week. And it puts Hall in good company among NFL running back salaries. Hall’s $15.25 million annual average makes him the third-highest paid running back in football, just ahead of Baltimore’s Derrick Henry ($15 million).

The top of the charts remain unchanged. Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million annual average) and Christian McCaffrey ($19 million) are still the cream of the crop.

Maybe Achane’s efforts to get a new deal in Miami won’t reach $20 million. But one thing is for certain. Miami is going to have a hard time getting a deal done for anything less than what Hall just inked for in New York.

De’Von Achane vs. Breece Hall

Hall just logged his first career 1,000 yard rushing season in 2025, while logging a handsome 1,415 yards from scrimmage. His five touchdowns in 2025 was tied for a career low. Contrast those numbers to De’Von Achane, who posted 1,838 yards from scrimmage and posted 12 touchdowns in 2025. Achane, in three seasons, as 35 career touchdowns — eight more than Hall has posted in four years of play.

Good for Hall. He endured a brutal start to his NFL career with injury as a rookie. He’s bounced back and been a high-volume player for the Jets the last three seasons and will now stack a franchise tag value in 2026 on top of the new three years of his deal for generational wealth. But this news is even better for De’Von Achane.

There’s no wiggle room here to invoke names like James Cook anymore, who last year staged a hold-in with the Buffalo Bills before inking a deal that averages $11.5 million per season. We’re in a whole different stratosphere, as evidenced by Hall getting nearly $4 million per year more. The question now is how far these numbers were from what Miami and Achane have been negotiating over in the past few weeks and months.
