Things are rarely boring when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings.

Monday night saw bodycam footage drop from a traffic stop in New Jersey. Normally, that wouldn’t be a big deal, but this one was a former insider for The Athletic, Dianna Russini.

She was stopped in New Jersey on January 19th, 2026, on the day Sean McDermott got fired. She used her connections in the NFL to get out of the ticket, flashing a text conversation with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Dianna Russini’s traffic stop raises more questions

It wasn’t just that Russini flashed a conversation via text message with O’Connell to get out of a ticket. Those who are in power often will wield it to get out of certain situations.

Where things got interesting was how Russini presumably talked about quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

“Their quarterback sucks.”

She didn’t mention McCarthy’s name, but being that this interaction came in January, it’s a safe assumption. It tracks that Russini would mention that while flaunting that she knows O’Connell. Biggest reason why? Former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was scapegoated with the lack of success McCarthy had.

Right after the Vikings fired Adofo-Mensah, I wrote about how the decision to move on from him essentially makes him a scapegoat.

The noise surrounding both O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah is significantly different since the news broke, emphasizing the point even more of who is to blame here. That PR is good for O’Connell right now, but let’s make one thing crystal clear:

There are zero excuses for O’Connell moving forward.

Essentially, moving on from just Adofo-Mensah places all the blame in his camp. Whether that is fair or not, it’s the reality. From here on out, it’s all on O’Connell. It also gives the Vikings the ability to move on from starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy if they want, because there is now a built in scapegoat.

The talk about both right after Adofo-Mensah was let go shifted drastically, as all of the onus of the McCarthy selection and lack of development went right to the former general manager. That was a big shift from the previous few years, when O’Connell was given the nickname quarterback killer before they selected McCarthy. Plus, there was an article from The Athletic last offseason, with Russini, Michael Silver, and Vikings beat reporter Alec Lewis on the byline, saying ownership, the Wilfs, defer to their head coach about quarterbacks, and it flies in the face that Adofo-Mensah is at fault.

Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who has worked in lockstep with O’Connell since both were hired three years ago, will defer to the coach’s choice of quarterbacks. The Wilfs have a 20-year track record of letting their top football executives and coaches make player-acquisition decisions and believe that O’Connell, who helped resurrect Darnold’s career in 2024, has a high level of expertise when it comes to assessing the sport’s most pivotal position.

The Athletic

Let’s put it all together. The common link with this entire thing is Russini, including the early discussion last offseason about wanting to bring in a serious quarterback to start in 2025 over McCarthy. She also reported that Adofo-Mensah took paternity leave during training camp of 2023 before walking it back somewhat.

While it can’t be proven 100%, it certainly seems like Russini is very pro-O’Connell in her reporting. From the Rodgers stuff to how Adofo-Mensah’s firing was reported, and now this comment on McCarthy, it all links together in a fascinating way.

It raises a major question as to what the Vikings will do with McCarthy this year. If Russini’s words, “their quarterback sucks,” being about McCarthy end up being what the franchise thinks about him, how much of that did O’Connell feel about him before he was selected at 10th overall?

Right now, the only thing we know for certain is that we don’t know, other than the messaging seems to be all over the place.
