Minnesota Vikings avoid long, drawn-out contract battle that could have impacted training camp
After signing eight of their nine NFL Draft picks, the Minnesota Vikings finalized their NFL Draft class by signing their final selection.
When the Minnesota Vikings signed eight of their nine NFL Draft picks, there was some concern about second-round pick linebacker Jake Golday not being signed. Second-round picks have been getting more and more money fully guaranteed in their contract, and it could have been a point of contention.
Luckily for the Vikings and Golday, they agreed to a contract, meaning they have now signed all nine NFL Draft picks.
Get to know Minnesota Vikings LB Jake Golday
- Golday played three years at Central Arkansas, with the first two of them at edge rusher.
- Once he transferred to Cincinnati, Golday played off-ball linebacker, but lined up in the slot a whopping 501 times.
- The 6-4, 240 pound linebacker has been a versatile chess piece across the board, playing on all three levels of the defense.
Minnesota Vikings sign Jake Golday
It’s important that Golday gets signed, as his versatility could work against him immediately in the NFL. While he can do a lot of different things, Golday needs to work more on fundamentals at linebacker. He mostly played overhang (in the slot) at Cincinnati, and will need some development in the basics of playing off-ball linebacker.
After 50th overall pick D’Angeleo Ponds didn’t sign a contract with fully guaranteed money with the New York Jets, there was some concern after the 48th overall pick, Avieon Terrell, did. The 49th overall pick, Lee Hunter, just signed with slightly less than $600k not fully guaranteed with the Carolina Panthers, likely opening the door to get a deal done with Golday. We don’t know the full terms of the deal yet, but it’s just good to see that the Vikings were able to get it done.
The only other contract that we don’t know the details of yet is the contract of Jauan Jennings, which should come sooner rather than later.
