Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback situation could be fixed by reuniting with an old friend
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has used three or more quarterbacks in two of his first four seasons, making the position a major priority.
We don’t know for sure how the Minnesota Vikings are going to fill out the quarterback room, but it’s likely going to look different than it did last year.
The uncertain future of J.J. McCarthy creates a lot of uncertainty at the position. The only guarantees we have are that Kyler Murray will be the starting quarterback and Carson Wentz. If they choose to move on from McCarthy, adding a quarterback who already has extensive experience in the offense would make all the sense in the world.
Nick Mullens could solve Vikings’ quarterback issues
After the Jacksonville Jaguars struck a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire quarterback Quinn Ewers, Nick Mullens’ days with the team were numbered. That came to fruition on Sunday morning, when it was announced he would be released.
Mullens spent three years with the Vikings after they traded for him during the 2022 preseason. He solved their issue at backup quarterback with both Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion were massively struggling. In fact, it was a preseason game against Mullens and the Las Vegas Raiders that prompted a trade.
During his tenure with the Vikings, he played in 13 games with three starts, and it was the all-fun show. 70.3% completions with 1,568 yards, eight touchdowns, and nine interceptions. It wasn’t the prettiest process, but he gave O’Connell exactly what he wants in a quarterback: someone willing to attack vertically. Mullens was always willing to throw deep and attack over the middle.
He’s the perfect backup quarterback in that he will keep you in games, but won’t ever threaten your starter. Plus, you can add Mullens right before the start of the season and he will already have plenty of experience in the offense.
Once he is officially released, the Vikings should jump on adding Mullens.
