Giants HC Brian Daboll refuses to address controversial decision from Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll avoided addressing the questionable play calling on a final play that cost them the game.
The New York Giants played an extremely messy game on Sunday that resulted in a 40-37 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
There are many plays Giants fans could pinpoint that led to losing a game they had every opportunity to win. However, there is one fourth-quarter play that is haunting the fan base.
From a day filled with mistakes, the one that epitomized the frustrating performance was the 18-yard reception on second and 10 that set up a 64-yard field goal by the best kicker in the NFL, Brandon Aubrey. That play sent the game to overtime and ultimately led to the Giants’ loss.
Giants fans and media members were hoping for some accountability on the play from the coaching staff, but sadly, head coach Brian Daboll refused to address it today.
“It’s not ever going to come down to just one play,” Daboll told reporters. “So, obviously, they hit the 64-yarder. Made a number of plays in overtime to be able to close it out. And at the end of the day, just didn’t do it collectively.
Giants HC Brian Daboll can’t explain late-game decision-making
On Monday, during media availability, Daboll was asked four times about what the Giants’ coaching decisions were on the Cowboys’ final drive of the fourth quarter. The Giants had just connected on an incredibly electric 48-yard bomb from Russell Wilson to Malik Nabers to take the lead.
With 25 seconds left, the Giants’ task was simple: prevent the Cowboys from reaching midfield, given their kicker had the strongest leg in the league. For some reason, the Giants dropped their safeties deep and left an easy lane over the middle of the field that resulted in the Ferguson completion.
While this singular play isn’t the sole reason why the Giants lost. It was, however, the worst mistake of the game at the worst possible time. All wrongs could have been righted if they had executed in that one situation. And all anyone wanted was accountability from the coaching staff to explain why they called the baffling coverage they did. Instead, Daboll waffled and stated it wasn’t the only play that caused the loss.
“We had a number of opportunities throughout the game in every area to close that game out,” Daboll said to the media today. “They had that big play to the middle route right there. We’d like to be a little bit tighter, but there’s a number of plays that came up throughout the game that if you have one different play there or here, it’s going to make a difference in a game like that.”
Media members were not satisfied with that answer because he skirted an explanation of the specific situation. When asked again, Daboll said the same exact thing.
“Again, it’s never going to come down to one play. I know that’s the one play that you’re talking about. But collectively, we have to be better.”
After multiple additional attempts, it was clear Daboll wasn’t going to budge. With a 0-2 start and a slow regression of this team, one would hope the head coach would aim to be more accountable and transparent. That’s not the case for Daboll.
