The Philadelphia Eagles are hearing nothing but rave reviews about new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, and the latest endorsement from offensive tackle Jordan Mailata might be the strongest one yet.

Mailata, running back Saquon Barkley, and quarterback Jalen Hurts have all offered glowing assessments of Mannion’s offensive system during OTAs, and the buzz around Philadelphia’s revamped scheme is reaching a new height heading into the 2026 season. The Eagles might have found the coordinator who unlocks this offense’s full potential. At least if what these players said comes to fruition.

Mailata did not hold back when describing Mannion’s football IQ.

“Sean Mannion is an evil genius,” Mailata said. “The guy knows ball. If I were to lock the three smartest people in the building in a room together, Sean would be there. He’d probably be by himself.”

That is not your standard offseason coach-speak. Mailata is calling him the smartest offensive mind in the entire organization, and it’s not even close. That kind of praise carries weight, especially coming from a veteran lineman who has a bright mind and has played under different schemes and coaching models.

The reviews keep piling up

Mailata’s comments are just the latest in a growing chorus of Eagles players singing Mannion’s praises. Saquon Barkley said a few months ago that the team’s new offense under Mannion is unlike anything he’s ever seen, adding that he’s “super excited” and calling the system “refreshing.”

When Mannion was first hired, Jalen Hurts offered a simple but telling reaction: “He is amazing.” And during his OTAs press conference, Hurts expanded on that, saying Mannion has built a sense of cohesiveness and togetherness in the locker room while installing a multi-step process that is complicated, but plays to the roster’s strengths.

Hurts also noted he’s more willing to go under center and adapt to this new system. That’s particularly impactful and relevant for Hurts, a quarterback who has dealt with constant coordinator turnover throughout his career. Hurts is not just tolerating another new voice in his ear. He sounds genuinely invested.

Why this should excite Eagles fans

We have to pump the brakes a little bit. We haven’t seen a single snap of this offense in a real game. OTA buzz is OTA buzz, and we’ve all been burned before by offseason optimism that evaporates by Week 3. But there’s a difference between generic coach-speak and what we’re hearing from multiple players across different position groups, all independently describing Mannion as something special.

And here’s the thing. We’ve seen what happens when the Eagles pair Hurts with a competent, creative play-caller. The two most successful stretches of Hurts’ career came under Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore. Both times, it was night and day compared to the alternative. The offense looked completely different with a coordinator who could scheme to Hurts’ strengths, get Barkley involved in creative ways, and keep defenses guessing. Sean Mannion has the chance to be that next guy, and everything we’re hearing suggests he might be even better.

The concern at this point is honestly not whether Mannion can get the job done. It’s that he’s so good he ends up getting poached for a head coaching job in a year or two. Philadelphia has been through this cycle before, and Hurts has suffered because of it. Every time the Eagles find a coordinator who clicks, someone comes along and offers that coach a promotion. Then we’re back to square one, installing a new system and building new chemistry.

The bigger picture in Philadelphia

The Eagles are in a fascinating spot heading into the 2026 season. Hurts is going to want a new contract soon. The roster is loaded with talent, but has questions on the offensive line. In the middle of all that uncertainty, Mannion might be the stabilizing force this team desperately needs.

Howie Roseman has a strong track record of smart roster decisions, and hiring Mannion is looking like another home run to the organization. The players have been consistent and specific in their praise. Not just polite, but genuinely enthusiastic about what this offense can become. At the moment, everything points toward the Eagles getting a big decision right.
