Jalen Hurts’ training camp highlights show more creativity than Eagles’ entire 2025 offense

Sean Mannion is an obvious upgrade at offensive coordinator compared to what Kevin Patullo did with the Eagles last season.

Jalen Hurts had some really good plays, and he had some really bad plays. That’s training camp. But the bigger story coming out of Philadelphia Eagles practice isn’t a box score or a stat line. It’s what offensive coordinator Sean Mannion is doing with this offense, and it already looks like a massive upgrade over everything we saw last season.

Hollywood Brown and Makai Lemon flash in new-look offense

There’s a clip circulating of Hurts throwing a touchdown to wide receiver Hollywood Brown on a mesh concept. This was something we really didn’t see last year, and Mannion had Brown crossing over on a deep crosser with pre-snap motion to scheme him wide open. The separation was ridiculous.

Then there’s another clip where Makai Lemon scored on a wheel route while lined up in the backfield. Again, look at the separation. These should be easy throws for Jalen to make, and yeah, it’s just practice. It’s not real game stuff yet. But the fact that Mannion is moving guys around, using deception, getting creative, and deploying these players in different ways is impressive. I’m already seeing more creativity in a few training camp sessions than I saw the entire last season from the Eagles’ offense.

I don’t want to just rag on Kevin Patullo, but seriously, what was he doing? The talent was there last year. The weapons were there. And somehow the offense looked stale and predictable for most of the season. I love that the Eagles are implementing new schemes and new concepts and just using the talent to the best of their ability. That’s all we’ve been asking for. Give Hurts a real system, give him some creativity, and let him cook.

The training camp interception panic is overblown

Now, on the flip side, a lot of people are hitting the panic button because apparently reporters are keeping training camp stats now and it’s become some big commotion. Jalen Hurts has more interceptions than he’s had at this point in training camp compared to the last four years, or he’s right around that number. And I said it once, I’ll say it again: I don’t care. I do not care if Hurts is throwing interceptions in training camp. I want him to get out of his comfort zone. I want them to run a more complex scheme. Jalen can throw the football. Let’s stop acting like a few picks in August practice mean anything when the guy is clearly being asked to do more.

And let’s not forget why some of those interceptions are happening. He has two really good corners in Quinyon Mitchell and Riq Woolen on the other side of the ball. Oh, and then Cooper DeJean at the nickel. You’re going against one of the best young secondaries in the NFL every single day. Of course there are going to be some turnovers. That’s iron sharpening iron, and it’s a good problem to have.

The people freaking out about training camp interception totals are the same people who will be celebrating when this defense locks teams down in September. You can’t have it both ways. Either the secondary is elite, which means they’re going to make plays on the quarterback in practice, or the secondary isn’t that good, which would mean Jalen’s picks were actually concerning. Pick one. I think we all know which one it is.

The bottom line here is simple. Sean Mannion’s offense already looks more creative, more dynamic, and more suited to the talent on this roster than anything Patullo put together last year. Hurts is being pushed, the weapons are being used properly, and Philadelphia is building something that could be dangerous. A few training camp interceptions against your own top-tier defense? That’s the last thing I’m worried about.
