Lane Johnson’s bold Saquon Barkley prediction speaks volumes about Eagles’ 2026 outlook
The offensive tackle is excited about what the star running back can do with the new offense under coordinator Sean Mannion.
Lane Johnson made the boldest statement of the day at Philadelphia Eagles camp, and it’s one that should have their fans fired up. The veteran offensive tackle was asked about Saquon Barkley’s potential this season, and his answer was as confident as it gets.
“We will see the Saquon of two years ago,” Johnson said.
Think about that for a second. Two years ago, Saquon Barkley had one of the best seasons in NFL history. A historic 2,000-yard campaign that put him in a class with the greatest running backs to ever play the game. And Lane Johnson is sitting here telling everybody that we’re about to see that version of Saquon again. That is a pretty bold statement.
That’s huge coming from Lane Johnson
What makes this hit different is who’s saying it. This isn’t some rookie or second-year player hyping up his teammate for the cameras. This is Lane Johnson, a lifetime Eagle. A cornerstone of this franchise who has seen every part of the game, knows what special talents look like, and was a massive part of Saquon having that monstrous season in the first place. When Lane speaks, I listen. When Lane says anything about this offense, I take it to heart.
And keep in mind, he’s saying this after last season, when the offensive line dealt with injuries all year and couldn’t stay healthy. That was a huge factor in why the Eagles couldn’t get the run game going consistently. So for Johnson to come back this season with that level of confidence, knowing how rough things were up front, tells you something about where this group is right now. He genuinely believes the offensive line is going to be healthy and dominant again.
Saquon can absolutely do this
Johnson has also talked about Markel Bell and some of the other young pieces up front, and the fact that he’s vouching for this group should make Eagles fans feel good. If the offensive line is right, Saquon is too special not to produce at an elite level. He has every ability in the world to make things happen when he’s running behind a healthy front five, and I think he’s going to do exactly that this season.
The Eagles should lean into that identity. Let the run game open up the pass. Develop that ground-and-pound mentality that made them so dangerous two years ago. You want to manage Saquon’s workload, sure, but this is a generational talent we’re talking about. Another potential record-breaking season is not out of the question if this team commits to what works.
Lane Johnson believes it. And honestly, so do I.
