Steelers re-sign seasoned veteran who may have an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster by the time September rolls around
The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed a veteran defender ahead of Week 2 of OTAs, and it’s a move that was a long time coming.
The Pittsburgh Steelers started their second week of organized team activities on Tuesday, and while the media wasn’t privy to the practice on the South Side, the team still made one of their moves public.
It happens to be the return of a key depth piece who will help round out the Steelers’ 90-man roster.
Steelers re-sign Dean Lowry to a one-year contract
“The Steelers signed defensive lineman Dean Lowry to a one-year contract Lowry, who will be entering his 11th season, spent the entire 2025 season on the Reserve/Injured List. Lowry, who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent in 2024. He appeared in 12 games that season, starting one and recorded five tackles and one sack.” – Teresa Varley, Steelers
Dean Lowry Facts
- Played college football at Northwestern.
- Selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 4th round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
- Turns 32 on June 9th.
Lowry was reportedly close to returning to the Steelers around free agency, but he opted to hold out until he was fully healthy following his ACL repair, and now the seasoned veteran returns to Pittsburgh with a shot at making the final 53-man roster.
Now it won’t be easy, as we know the Steelers have their top 3 solidified with Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, and Derrick Harmon. Behind him are names like Yahya Black, Gabe Rubio, and free agent addition Sebastian Joseph-Day.
Lowry was primarily a special teamer during his first season in Pittsburgh in 2024, and that will be his way onto the roster again in 2026. It will be an uphill climb for the veteran who started his career in the NFC North, but perhaps the Steelers and Lowry have one more run left in both of them.
