ATLANTA — Tennessee Titans quarterback Cameron Ward played three offensive series on Friday night in his second preseason appearance. A promising first drive petered out, followed by consecutive 3-and-outs for the rookie.

Veteran wide receiver Van Jefferson should receive much scrutiny for failing Ward in a critical spot.

Cam Ward undermined by Van Jefferson drop

On Tennessee’s first offensive possession, Ward and the offense looked to have positive momentum.

Atlanta Falcons punter Bradley Pinion pinned the Titans at their own six after the game’s opening drive. An Elic Ayomanor 35-yard reception sandwiched by two runs gaining a total of 11 yards had Ward and the offense in Atlanta territory in short order. 2nd-and-3 turned into 2nd-and-13 after rookie running back Kalel Mullings was flagged for offensive holding, but Ward got great protection for the Tennessee offensive line and threw an absolute laser to receiver Van Jefferson who beat the coverage.

Jefferson then had one of the most disgusting drops you’ll see in preseason football.

On any other roster Jefferson, who signed a one-year, $1.67 million deal this offseason, would likely be cut. He might still be when it comes time to trim the roster down to the intial 53 players ahead of regular season action. Jefferson is meant to be a buffer for a team leaning on Ward, veteran Calvin Ridley and three fourth-round rookie pass catches in Chimere Dike, Elic Ayomanor and tight end Gunnar Helm.

Jefferson cannot be a liability on a team that desperately needs stability for its young passer.

Ward was only supposed to receive two offensive series but the Titans coaching staff put him back out there after the initial 3-and-out only to get more of the same. After 14 offensive plays in his first preseason action at Tampa Bay, Ward played only 11 against the Falcons.

Tennessee concludes its exhibitions with a home date next Friday, August 22 against the Minnesota Vikings.
