The De’Von Achane contract extension with the Miami Dolphins is in — and it sounds like there’s some fascinating fine print involved
The Miami Dolphins and running back De’Von Achane have a deal. And we have our first clue about some key details, too.
The Miami Dolphins and running back De’Von Achane have a deal!
You can go ahead and put the speculation to bed on this one. After months of wondering if Achane was going to be a casualty of the Dolphins’ rebuild or, alternatively, if someone was going to pony up enough compensation to change Miami’s mind…this is done. NFL insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report that Achane and the Dolphins had agreed to terms on a 4-year, $68 million contract extension to keep the star running back in South Florida.
But as is usually the case on these matters, the more time passes, the more details emerge. We’ve already got an interesting wrinkle in the reporting of this contract.
It sounds like the Miami Dolphins’ deal with De’Von Achane will be anchored by significant annual incentives & bonus money
ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques confirmed the report shortly after the news broke. And there was a key clarification of interest about the terms of De’Von Achane’s contract with Miami. Louis-Jacques has reported that the standard terms of this deal include $16 million annually — with incentives that could push the number up to $17 million. The initial reported terms from Schultz did include that incentive money as part of the standard presentation of the dollars.
This is pretty typical for contract reporting. The first numbers to hit the market are usually the sexiest.
That isn’t to say that $16 million annually plus incentives still isn’t sexy. Of course it is. It makes him the third-highest paid running back in football regardless from an annual average standpoint. But it does raise a new question as the “will he stay or will he go?” is put to bed. What are said incentives that could offer him such a big annual boost in earnings? We’ll find out soon enough. But for now, let’s celebrate Miami’s best weapon becoming locked in for the long haul.
