Latest Commanders NFL Draft intel ties them to premier prospect, which doesn’t bode well for struggling player
The Commanders had a virtual meeting with a top defender in the 2026 NFL Draft, who would take over the starting spot of a young player.
The Washington Commanders fixed their roster during free agency, but they still have roster holes to fix during the rest of the offseason.
They only have six picks to work with in the 2026 NFL Draft, but they can still add many impact players. As the NFL Draft approaches, the Commanders will be meeting with top prospects on their board so their decisions can be clearer when they’re on the clock.
The latest NFL Draft intel says the Commanders met with a top CB in the draft who could steal a starting spot from Mike Sainristil.
Commanders had a virtual meeting with Texas CB Malik Muhammad
The Commanders are traveling around the country to pro days at college campuses, hosting their own top-30 visits, but also holding virtual meetings with NFL Draft prospects. We can now add Texas CB Malik Muhammad to the list of players the Commanders are targeting after a virtual meeting with the premier defender.
Muhammad tells Justin Melo from “NFL Draft on SI” that he recently had a virtual meeting with the Commanders, which isn’t his first time talking to them.
Muhammad was also at the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl, where every prospect talks to every team, so the Commanders have had multiple points of contact with him so far. The Commanders still have a lot of questions regarding their CB room, but should they draft Muhammad?
Why the Commanders should draft CB Malik Muhammad
The Commanders added Amik Robertson in free agency, who has inside and outside versatility, and is likely their nickel corner next season. They still lack a premier outside corner with Mike Sainristil struggling, and Trey Amos coming off a fractured fibula in his impressive rookie season. Sainristil allowed the most receptions and touchdowns in the NFL last season with 67 catches and nine touchdowns.
He did bring in four interceptions, but the bad drastically outweighed the good. Sure, Sainristil can bounce back under Daronte Jones’ new scheme, but they need a lockdown outside corner for once, and Muhammad would be a great option with the No. 71 overall pick. Muhammad has been a premier corner since he started as a freshman, and he will still be 21 by the NFL Draft. He allowed just 21 catches for 168 yards last year with a career-best 57.8 passer rating allowed.
Muhammad will have a lot of interest this offseason from many teams, and his hype is only growing after an impressive NFL Scouting Combine performance. He measured in at 6-0, 183 pounds, then ran a 4.42 40-yard dash and jumped for a 39″ vertical.
If the Commanders don’t select Mansoor Delane with the No. 7 overall pick, Muhammad should be their top option with the No. 71 overall pick. They can’t go into the season with a big what-if at the CB position, and if that means replacing a former second-round pick in Sainristil, then so be it.
