Top remaining standout free agents for Commanders to target after surprisingly quiet Day 1 of NFL free agency
The Commanders have plenty of free agent targets left after the first day of NFL free agency who can make a major impact on the roster.
The Washington Commanders had a relatively quiet first day of the NFL two-day negotiation window period, but the job isn’t finished yet.
General manager Adam Peters made a giant splash by signing EDGE Odafe Oweh to a four-year, $100 million contract to solidify the defensive line. They also added Amik Robertson in the secondary, and brought back DT Tim Settle on a three-year deal.
The first day is behind us, and now it’s time to look at the top remaining free agents for the Commanders to target.
Free agent targets could be signed at anytime, so these names could be claimed when you’re reading this article. Check back in for more updates as the NFL free agency period continues.
Romeo Doubs, WR
The Commanders have been very vocal about adding another playmaker for Jayden Daniels, and they were very aggressive in landing Alec Pierce, according to reports, but he stayed with the Colts. Doubs is a young ascending player at just 26 years old, and fills a massive need of youth and production in the WR room. Doubs is coming off a career season with 724 yards, six touchdowns, and just three drops. He would thrive in a larger role in Washington, where he will get plenty of targets.
Rachaad White, RB
The Commanders surprisingly haven’t landed a RB yet, and they’re running out of options with Kenneth Walker III, Travis Etienne, Rico Dowdle, and Tyler Allgeier off the market. Rachaad White is the best RB left in free agency, and he could be an underrated option for the Commanders. He’s been linked to them with his connection to his former college teammate Jayden Daniels. White would be a great compliment to Bill Croskey-Merritt and bring a true receiving threat to the backfield.
Jaquan Brisker, Safety
The Chicago Bears added safety Bryan Cook, which means Jaquan Brisker is very unlikely to return. The Commanders should target Brisker, who is the top safety free agent remaining. He’s about to turn 27 years old, and he bounced back in 2025 after battling a concussion for most of 2024. He needs a new home to return to his old form. Brisker has played almost split snaps at free safety and in the box in his NFL career, so you can move him around at 6-1, 200 pounds.
Tariq Woolen, CB
Even after signing Robertson, the Commanders could still add a top cornerback to play on the outside with Robertson’s versatility. Tariq Woolen is the top CB available, and he fits what Jones wants on defense with speed, length, and lockdown ability, but only if he can stay consistent. Woolen’s market projections are all over the place, but the almost 27-year-old CB is worth checking on at the right price.
Honorable Mentions:
The Green Bay Packers finally released Elgton Jenkins, and he can be an option at left guard and center for the Commanders. They could also look at WR Jauan Jennings’ market, who Peters knows very well, if they miss on Doubs. NFL insider Albert Breer also reported that the Commanders checked in on center Lloyd Cushenberry III, who is a high-end free agent who just needs to stay healthy.
LB Leo Chenal also makes sense with the LB market drying up fast with Devin Lloyd, Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, Devin Bush, Alex Anzalone, and Tremaine Edmunds heading elsewhere. I expect them to continue being aggressive at WR, find their starting center, and continue to focus on the defense along the way. Nick Cross is another safety option as well, and the Commanders’ last real TE option is Chigoziem Okonkwo.
