In 2024, a lot of players on the Oklahoma Sooners got a chance to show what they can do — guys who normally wouldn't if a huge injury issue hadn't occurred.

Some freshmen, true freshmen, sophomores, and even journeyman college football guys who never really got to play, all got chances. It wasn't planned out that way; in fact, I think the Sooners would rather that didn't happen. But, it showed them what they had to work with in the future, that is, if they didn't plan on transferring or leaving in some way, that next season. And, a lot of guys did. The Sooners were one of the top-three SEC schools in transfer outs.

Because of injuries to Andrel Anthony and Nic Anderson to start the season, junior wide receiver Brenan Thompson was able to play a ton of football. He showed off some really good skills that were valuable to the Sooners and their very bad offense.

But after the year the Sooners had on the side of the ball, Thompson transferred out.

“The familiarity with coach (Jeff) Lebby [former OU OC] made it an easy decision," Thompson, the now Mississippi State Bulldogs receiver, said at SEC Media Days.

In 2024, Thompson had just 230 receiving yards on 19 catches and two touchdowns to go along with it. That was somehow worse than the season before, where he had just seven catches, but 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns. That showed just how bad the offense was.

So, yes, I would transfer, too, if two years in a row I had pretty down years, and I know I'm capable of doing better. And, on top of that, at the time, Thompson probably didn't know what the future looked like for OU. But, either way, he's not holding any ill will towards the Sooners.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for (Oklahoma)… I loved the culture there… Ultimately, I had to make the best decision for me.”

The Sooners ended up replacing him with some pretty good options in the transfer portal, but they will miss what Thompson brought to the field and off the field.

Now, he is getting ready for a potential special season at Mississippi State.

Brenan Thompson set to have bigger role at Mississippi State

Brenen Thompson is slated to start for Jeff Lebby’s offense in the upcoming season. Along with Anthony Evans III (transfer from Georgia), those two seem to have the most upside for breakout seasons for the Bulldogs. Thompson’s role is expected to be on the outside more often, while Evan’s holds down the slot. Thompson’s stature won’t wow anyone, but his athletic attributes, particularly electric speed, can really play well into the style of passing game that Lebby wants to see in Starkville. Intrigued to see how he performs as long as he stays available. – Adam Holt, A to Z Sports
