Oklahoma Sooners are being predicted to land an elite 2028 playmaker who could help kick-start their class
The Oklahoma Sooners have a great start to their 2028 recruiting class, and grabbing Dedrick Kimbrough would be great.
The Oklahoma Sooners appear to be in a strong position to land one of the top wide receivers in the 2028 recruiting class.
Dedrick Kimbrough, a four-star receiver out of Alabaster, Alabama, is being predicted to commit to Oklahoma at an 84.3% clip, according to On3 Oklahoma recruiting editor Josh McCuiston. Kimbrough carries a 90.59 composite rating, ranks as a top-150 player nationally, the No. 21 wide receiver in the country, and the No. 9 player in Alabama. He plays at Thompson High School.
Alabama, Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Notre Dame are among the other schools showing interest. Kimbrough has taken four visits to Alabama, likely due to proximity, along with two to Vanderbilt, two to Auburn, and one each to Ole Miss, Florida, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma. His lone visit to Oklahoma was unofficial.
It’s still early in the process
It’s important to remember how early this recruitment remains. Just because a prediction has been placed does not mean a commitment is imminent. It could happen soon, or it could be weeks away. These are high school kids, and keeping that in perspective matters.
Kimbrough stands at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and has the frame you want in an SEC wide receiver. He will likely continue to develop physically, especially once he gets on a college campus and into a strength program like the one Oklahoma runs.
The Sooners currently have just one commitment in their 2028 recruiting class: quarterback Trey Tagliaferri. Adding a talent like Kimbrough to the board would be significant, but Oklahoma has until National Signing Day in Feb. 2028 to fill out the class. There is no rush.
Beating Alabama would be a statement
Landing Kimbrough over Alabama would carry real weight. The Crimson Tide already have seven commitments in their 2028 recruiting class, including quarterback Charles Scott and quarterback Kingston Prayor, a 92.55 composite-rated player. Alabama also recently landed Tysir Young, a four-star linebacker. The Crimson Tide are recruiting at a high level in this cycle, but the prediction market suggests Kimbrough is leaning toward Oklahoma.
Wide receivers coach Emmitt Jones deserves credit for the momentum at the position. Jones has done strong work recruiting receivers over the past few years, and Kimbrough could become the latest example of that track record paying off. If the Sooners can pull a four-star wideout out of Alabama’s backyard, it would signal that Oklahoma’s reach in the SEC continues to grow.
