Brent Venables just provided every Sooners fan with the perfect news regarding big-time playmaker at SEC Media Days

Last season, the Oklahoma Sooners went through some crazy stuff, specifically on the injury front. That, among so many other things, is what held the offense back, making them one of the worst in the entire country.
But the injuries played a huge part in all of that, as we just mentioned. I mean, what other team had their five best wide receivers injured all at the same time? Sure, it was rough, and the offense was very bad and almost unwatchable, but it did help those young guys who got playing time in the long run. But, the truth is, those guys that were thrown into the fire are still not ready to be full-time starting wide receivers.'
If they were, the unit wouldn't have been so bad last year, and the Sooners wouldn't have made the moves they did this offseason. They got some really good receivers in the transfer portal, and may, sneakily, have one of the deepest rooms in the SEC now.
Sooners get great news regarding Javonnie Gibson's injury
Health is what's most important. None of the additions they have made matter if they can't stay healthy. They have already had some injury issues this offseason with Javonnie Gibson, so that's certainly something that can be worrisome. But, there is good news on that front.
"He is out of the boot and on schedule," head coach Brent Venables told local media on site at SEC Media Days just before his press conference.
Gibson joined the Oklahoma Sooners after transferring from Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the 2024-25 offseason. He had a standout 2024 season at UAPB, catching 70 passes for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns, earning second-team FCS All-American honors. His performance, including 430 yards after the catch and an average of 31.4 yards on deep targets, made him one of the top receiver targets in the transfer portal this offseason.
At Oklahoma, he’s expected to bolster a thin wide receiver group hit hard by transfer portal losses, including Nic Anderson and Jalil Farooq. His size, speed, and fit in Ben Arbuckle’s offense make him a likely key contributor.
“He had surgery a couple of days ago,” Venables said early this offseason when the injury happened. “It got rolled up on in practice, unfortunately. If he just stays on schedule, he’ll be back to start the season and be back with us.”
And it appears that he is on schedule after a broken leg injury has sidelined him this offseason.
Elite 2026 wide receiver could potentially be looking to help the Oklahoma Sooners on offense in the future
They could certainly use him.
