In 2023, the Detroit Lions signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to be their backup quarterback. After the season concluded, Bridgewater retired to become the head coach of his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School.
After coaching the team to a state title in 2024, Bridgewater came out of retirement to be the Lions' backup quarterback again. The intention was that once the season concluded, he'd go back to coaching high school football.
On Monday, it was announced by the Florida High School Athletic Association that Bridgewater would be suspended from coaching the team for giving impermissible benefits.
This all stems from Bridgewater asking fans to donate funds to help his players get Uber rides, meals, and recovery services. Something that the former Lions quarterback had been previously paying out of pocket. The FHSAA caught wind and suspended Bridgewater and levied punishments on the school.
"There is recent precedent for the FHSAA punishing programs for players receiving free meals and Uber rides. Last fall, several players at The First Academy were found to have received impermissible benefits, including a free Uber ride. The FHSAA hit the Royals with a two-year postseason ban and a $36,000 fine as a result."
There is no word as to how long Bridgwater's suspension will last at this time, but it's bound to cause Lions fans to wonder if he's not coaching right now, could he come back and play for Detroit?
Never say never, but Bridgewater certainly implied in a post on his Facebook that he has no plans to walk away from Miami Northwestern.

Verne and his Admnistrative homeboys want me gone apparently and tried to hire one of my dawgs like bro wasn’t gone lace me up… The suspension came from MNW and it’s impossible to suspend someone who doesn’t work for you. So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.

We'll see what happens, but at this time, it seems Bridgewater plans to try to stay in Miami.
