It wasn’t too long ago that former LSU quarterback TJ Finley was dazzling folks during practice with his combination of size and arm strength. Well, I guess that was five years ago now. Since then, Finley has taken the phrase “well traveled” to a whole other level.

Things didn’t go the way that many anticipated at LSU, playing just one season with the Tigers in a limited capacity before opting to transfer. Finley eventually ended up at Auburn for two seasons, but once again, things didn’t go overly well. After two seasons there, the 6-7, 245-pound passer was once again on the move, eventually ending up with Texas State.

During that 2023 season with the Bobcats, Finley finally showcased the talent that once made him a notable recruit coming out of Ponchatoula High School in Louisiana. In 13 games that year, Finley threw for 3,439 yards and 24 touchdowns. He did so while completing over 67 percent of his passes, and adding another five scores on the ground.

With that success, it looked like Finley had finally found stability. He had a chance to finish out his college football career on a high note after a less than ideal beginning. For whatever reason, Finley wasn’t settled. He opted to transfer to Western Kentucky, but would lose the starting quarteback job to Caden Veltkamp. It was a frustrating year for Finley, throwing just a single touchdown in relief.

With one year of eligibility remaining, Finley once again entered the transfer portal. He would eventually wind up back home in Louisiana with the Tulane Green Wave. With the success that program has had recently, there had to be a good chance to get Finley’s career back on track, right? Right?

Before playing a game with Tulane, Finley is already on the way out. He dealt with arrest earlier this offseason for illegal possession of stolen things, and was suspended from the team. It appears that Finley wasn’t able to recover from that situation, and will now be looking for his sixth program in his college career.

In theory, the transfer portal is a great thing. It gives players an opportunity for a fresh start. When dealing with younger people, sometimes bad decisions are made. Coaches changes also happen, and promises aren’t always kept. There is a lot of positives for the player to be able to get a fresh reset.

In Finley’s case, this type of movement is not what the portal was designed for. At least this example of the portal misuse is almost over. After entering he’s been through, it would be shocking to see much of a market for Finley.
