On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs will take their first steps toward the 2025 NFL season and their quest for another Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LX.

Practically every NFL team, including the Chiefs, kicks off its voluntary offseason workout program on Monday, April 21. Teams with new head coaches (Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets) were each allowed a bit of a head start on the offseason program.

Monday begins two weeks of Phase I offseason workouts. This part of the program doesn't involve football activities, but is intended as a ramp-up period for players to get acclimated ahead of Phase II. Players can attend team meetings, partake in strength and conditioning training at team facilities, and participate in physical rehabilitation only. For that reason, the Chiefs have recently encouraged their players to do their own thing during Phase I. They'll hold virtual team meetings while players train independently. They'll typically only have players in at team facilities if they're in the area or rehabbing from injuries.

Patrick Mahomes, for instance, typically hosts offensive skill players for some offseason training down in Texas. The players who gather independently for work are not bound to the same rules as if they were working together at the team facility in Kansas City, which is why it makes sense to gather for a throwing session to work on timing, route running, and so on. Many players, such as Xavier Worthy, Isiah Pacheco, Elijah Mitchell, Noah Gray, Nikko Remigio, Robert Tonyan, Justyn Ross, and Skyy Moore, have participated. Other quarterbacks like Gardner Minshew, Chris Oladokun, and Bailey Zappe have also been out to Texas.

On Monday, May 5, the team will advance to Phase II of the offseason workout program, which includes on-field workouts with individual or group instruction and drills, but still no live contact or 11-on-11, 7-on-7, and 9-on-7 team drills.

We’ll enter Phase III of the offseason workout program at the end of May with 10 total voluntary Organized Team Activities sessions (May 27-29, June 2-4, and June 10-13). OTAs include on-field workouts with individual and group components, including walkthroughs, but no live contact is permitted during these workouts.

Rookie minicamp is the first mandatory part of the offseason workout program. Teams can hold their rookie minicamp during the first or second weekend following the 2025 NFL Draft. Only rookies, select first-year players, and select injured players are permitted to attend. This serves as an introduction to life in the NFL for incoming players.

Every player on the 90-man offseason roster must attend the team's mandatory minicamp session from June 17 through June 19. Training camp dates won't be announced until later this Summer, but they typically begin sometime in late July. Rookies and quarterbacks reported to camp on July 16th last year and on July 18th the year prior.
