Kansas City Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed continues his ramp-up period at training camp after rejoining the team about a month ago.

Sneed returns to Kansas City after spending a few years with the Tennessee Titans following a trade. Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo views the veteran corner as a potential difference-maker for a defense featuring plenty of new and young faces heading into the 2026 NFL season. Not only will he be asked to play the role of the veteran mentor, but he’ll be asked to help be the glue that binds the defense together.

Sneed recently spoke to reporters in his hometown during a charity event, explaining that he aims to “reclaim himself” with the Chiefs. That goal has begun to take shape on the practice field, though in measured doses. Sneed has been on the field during the early portions of training camp practice. He’s worked during install and walkthrough periods, but he has taken a sideline view when full-team drills begin. This is by design as he continues to get in football shape and acclimate in his return.

Sneed’s role is already expanding at Chiefs training camp

On Wednesday, Sneed was seen working primarily at outside cornerback during jog-through periods. By Thursday, however, he rotated between the slot cornerback position and outside cornerback. The expanded usage suggests the coaching staff is exploring how best to deploy him once he’s fully cleared for competitive reps. If you’ll recall, Sneed’s early success came in the slot. He was often used as a blitzer. It was only in his final season that he became a weapon to shadow a team’s best player.

How much of an on-field impact will Sneed have? That remains to be seen. What is clear is that Kansas City views him as a player who could be a difference-maker. He can bring chemistry to a defense loaded with unfamiliar pieces.

Spagnuolo spoke about Sneed’s potential impact and explained how he feels about having the veteran back in the fold.

“You know how I feel about (CB L’Jarius Sneed),” Spagnuolo said on Thursday. “It’s like having the son come back, right? You guys know he’s in the ramp-up; he hasn’t really been out there, but when you see him just in the jog-throughs that we do against ourselves, I mean, you can see it’s coming back; he’s excited. I love the way LJ, (LB) Nick (Bolton), (LB) Drue (Tranquill), (DB) Chamarri (Conner)—I love the way they interact. They were together for a number of years when we were playing really well, so hopefully we can find that same ingredient.”

The veterans on the defensive side of the ball are fixtures for the defense. They act as a guiding light for the young players treading water with the information and workload at training camp. With a player like Sneed returning, he truly could be the missing ingredient in what the Chiefs believe can be a strong defense in 2026.

What’s also apparent in Spagnuolo’s comments is Sneed’s passion and excitement for returning to Kansas City. This is the place where he won a Super Bowl championship. It’s where he became a true shutdown No. 1 cornerback. He hasn’t been that player for the last two seasons, through no fault of his own. Injury and circumstance with the Titans prevented him from that.

The Chiefs want to put Sneed in the best possible situation to reclaim the type of player he once was early in his NFL career. This defense needs its veterans to set the tone. Sneed’s return could prove to be one of the more significant additions Kansas City made this offseason. Even if it didn’t generate the same headlines as a splashy free-agent signing or draft pick.
