The wait is just about over for the 2025 NFL Draft and the three-day event will begin on Thursday evening in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Cleveland Browns will be making a first round pick on Thursday for the first time since 2021 when they took Greg Newsome II from Northwestern with the No. 26 overall pick.
Making picks isn’t the only thing the Browns could make happen this week, as they could be in on the trade market as well a year away from going 3-14.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter names Browns CB Greg Newsome as a potential trade piece this week
For the last couple of years, rumors have gone around on whether or not the Browns should move Newsome. On Monday morning, Schefter again listed Newsome as a player that ‘could be expendable’. Newsome has started 42 of 54 games he’s played in over the last four years for the Browns and is playing on his fifth-year option in 2025. If the Browns don’t plan on keeping Newsome around for the long term, now would be the time to trade him.
Newsome has value mostly due to his flexibility to play inside and outside on the boundary. Newsome was a full-time starter for the Browns mostly on the outside in his first two seasons. Ckebekand drafted Martin Emerson Jr. in 2023 and he’s a better fit for the boundary, so that pushed Newsome inside. At one time, Newsome was vocal about not wanting to be on the inside but it ended up working out.
Health has been the main problem for Newsome, who has played in more than 13 games just once in his four seasons, and that was 15 games in 2022. The 6-foot, 192-pound cornerback has three interceptions with those coming over the last two seasons.
Newsome will be just 25 years old during the 2025 season and could net the Browns a draft selection in a trade. Myles Harden and Cam Mitchell are options on the roster to replace Newsome in the slot but the Browns would be wise to draft depth there if they were to move Newsome.
Cleveland has a decision to make on their former first-round selection that is in a contract year.
