Speaking of the Lions, there were a handful of former Lions players playing in Canada over the weekend. These guys are no doubt looking to show some good tape to try to get back into the NFL. Here they are:
BC Lions
Edge Mathieu Betts: Lions fans had a lot of hopes for the former CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player. It didn't work out at the end of the day, and he wound up signing back to the BC Lions in 2024.
WR Stanley Berryhill: He signed with the Lions in 2022 and looked pretty good down the stretch. There were some thoughts that he might carve out a nice role in 2023, but he was suspended for violating the league's gambling rules, and the Lions released him.
DL Christian Covington: The Lions signed the veteran defensive lineman in 2023, but he was cut at the end of training camp.
Edmonton Elks
S Chelen Garnes: An undrafted rookie for the Lions last year. He was cut at final cutdown, but did not get claimed by any other team.
WR Jalon Calhoun: Another undrafted rookie from last season. He was waived at the end of camp and went unclaimed.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
RB Greg Bell: An undrafted rookie in 2022. He was signed to a fairly big deal and showed some nice signed earlier on, but then a hamstring injury cost him the season. He was waived the following summer.
Ottawa Redblacks
WR Kalil Pimpleton: Everyone should remember Pimpleton from Hard Knocks. He was one of the players that the show really focused on. He wound up getting waived and spent some time with the Giants before heading to Canada.
Toronto Argonauts
TE Isaac Darkangelo: An undrafted rookie in 2023. He was only with the Lions for a month before they released him to make room for Germain Ifedi. He also spent some time with the Michigan Panthers.
Calgary Stampeders
RB Dedrick Mills: An undrafted rookie in 2021. Was cut at final cutdown.
