CBS Sports recently graded each SEC program's 2024 freshman class and they didn't give the Tennessee Vols a very high grade.
The national sports media outlet gave Tennessee's 2024 freshman class a C+ for their performance this past season.
CBS Sports did point out defensive back Boo Carter as a "hit" for the Vols.
From CBS Sports: A much-hyped freshman throughout the 2024 offseason, Carter largely lived up to expectations as a part-time starter. He finished the year with 38 tackles, 3 TFLs and an interception. Matthews flirted with the transfer portal this offseason but opted to stay. That's big for the Vols as Matthews, who had seven catches for 90 yards this past season, is viewed as the future of the wide receiver room.
Given Tennessee's sweeping losses across its offensive line, wide receiver and running back rooms, several second-year players are expected to compete for starting spots in 2025.
It's a bit unfair to grade Tennessee's 2024 class this soon. The Vols had quite a few upperclassman in key positions last season, which left limited opportunities for freshmen to shine.
One true freshman (aside from Carter) who did shine, however, was running back Peyton Lewis.
The former four-star recruit carried the ball 64 times for 339 yards and three touchdowns last season while playing behind Dylan Sampson and DeSean Bishop.
With Sampson off to the NFL, Lewis is in prime position to earn a key role in Tennessee's offense in 2025 (along with Bishop and Duke Blue Devils transfer Star Thomas).
Other players from Tennessee's 2024 class that could play a big role for the Vols in 2025 include wide receiver Mike Matthews, wide receiver Braylon Staley, edge rusher Jordan Ross, offensive lineman William Satterwhite, and cornerback Kaleb Beasley, among others.
Tennessee doesn’t currently appear to be one of the top schools in recruiting battle for the son of a Vols legend
