For much of Gabriel Georges’ recruitment, we heard national analysts say that the five-star running back’s best relationship was with Ohio State running backs coach Carlos Locklyn.
That narrative gained steam after Gabriel Georges’ uncle said that the family’s best relationship might (emphasis on “might”) be with Locklyn.
“We might have the best position coach relationship with Coach Lock, been around him a long time, but I think overall when it comes to a staff the best relationships are with Tennessee,” said Gabriel Georges’ uncle to On3 last month.
It turns out that Gabriel Georges’ best position coach relationship was actually with Tennessee running backs coach De’Rail Sims.
“A ton of credit goes to Tennessee running backs coach De’Rail Sims,” wrote 247Sports’ Tom Loy. “While many, myself included, pointed to positive relationships that Gabriel Georges had with other running backs coaches across the country, in the end, there wasn’t a better connection for DGG than the one that he had with Sims.”
“That bond was unmatched. It wasn’t even close,” said a source to 247Sports of the relationship with Sims. “He was a big part of this decision.”
Sims flies under the radar as an assistant coach at Tennessee, but he was certainly a big reason why the Vols won this battle over Ohio State.
