One of the biggest storylines currently surrounding the Indianapolis Colts is that general manager Chris Ballard announced that the team is planning an open battle for their starting quarterback position in 2025.

Hearing that Anthony Richardson isn't the automatic starter heading into training camp came as a surprise for a lot of people. But is this the team just trying to motivate Richardson, or is this a serious consideration? NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN has released multiple free-agent QB options that are currently on the Colts' radar

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler shares free agent QBs the Colts could target in free agency to compete with Anthony Richardson

"As the Colts look for veteran quarterback options, names on their radar include Daniel Jones, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, and Jacoby Brissett. This is a mix of quarterbacks who can support Anthony Richardson and guys who will be looking to start games somewhere. I've heard Jones' name more than once in regards to the Colts.

Indianapolis has not given up on Richardson, but how the team approaches the free agency period will be telling."

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler

Fowler shared multiple names here: three former first-round picks, Daniel Jones, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, and former Colts QB Jacoby Brissett. This report from Fowler lines up with what I was able to gather with boots on the ground in Indianapolis this week at the scouting combine. Where I heard each of these names as options for the Colts at QB. To add one to his list, I also had multiple people share that veteran Jameis Winston is another QB the Colts are likely to consider.

Looking at these options, I only think one option would take a large financial commitment: Justin Fields. Many at the combine expect him to land nearly $20 million a year wherever he signs, and the Colts wouldn't entertain giving him that deal unless he has a real chance to start. Daniel Jones is the only other option I think would create anywhere near a camp battle. I know fans have some negative opinions of him, but he has had a lot of good moments in the NFL and looks like someone who could have a Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold type of career revival if he lands in the right spot. The other options here wouldn't spark any real competition but would be decent backups and shouldn't command much in terms of their contract. So I guess we will see how serious the Colts are about adding a QB to push Richardson, or if those were just flashy words used to motivate their 2023 first-round pick.
