The Pittsburgh Steelers have a plan A and plan B when it comes to their QB decsion in 2025.

Right now, that concerns bringing back either one of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields.

But if they can't and another avenue opens up, one name that would set them back years is starting to emerge…

Steelers in the Derek Carr Sweepstakes

"If you say to me, what's the best educated guest based on talking to several sources around the league, Justin Fields over Russell Wilson," NFL insider Ian Rapoport said during Sunday's NFL Combine coverage. "At least right now feels like the direction they're going…Justin Fields does seem to be at least the priority now. They do have an edge up on everyone…

"…There is still a chance as of right now that Derek Carr becomes free. So you have a team like maybe the Steelers, maybe the Titans. I mean, there are options out there for him. Unless the Saints get a deal done or keep him at his $40 million number right now, Carr could also be available. So this carousel is not quite settled just yet."

Here's the problem with Derek Carr. He like Russell Wilson is a seasoned veteran. Only Carr doesn't have the resume, the familiarity with the Steelers offense, or the ability to play in cold weather that Wilson has.

If the Steelers want to start a QB in their 30s who is coming off an injured season, they have their guy, and it's not Derek Carr. Not to mention, the odds of the New Orleans Saints outright releasing Carr doesn't seem very high when analyzing his contract…

Carr, on the surface, seems like a QB who could succeed in an Arthur Smith offense. The veteran quarterback does his best work with a strong play-action game and capable blockers in front of him.

That being said, with offensive line questions and a rushing attack that may not boast much upside, Carr landing in Pittsburgh would be risky for both sides. Trading for Carr would need to be basically off the table for the Steelers, as his current contract is just too expensive. In the free agency pool, there are other options that probably won’t cost as much as him, either.

While I do not believe Carr was the biggest offensive problem over the past two years with the Saints, he doesn’t elevate a team enough for me to see much success for him in the current climate with the Steelers.Adam Holt, A to Z Sports New Orleans

A cap number of $51m and $61m in 2025 and 2026 respectively, it would be remarkably out of character for the Steelers to even consider such a trade.

So under no circumstances should Carr be a real option for the Steelers, especially with new names set to hit the market.
