Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Bru McCoy was asked at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this past week which UT player fans should watch for in 2025.
McCoy, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, went with redshirt sophomore running back DeSean Bishop, a player that was a bit of an afterthought heading into the 2024 season (McCoy also pointed out rising sophomore wide receiver Mike Matthews and rising redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava).
"Definitely some of the guys we talked about, Mike Matthews, Nico," said McCoy. "But one guy to look out for is DeSean Bishop. He’s a stud, local guy, extremely hard worker. I spent a lot of time in the gym with him, and he’s got a ton of talent."
Bishop is a former three-star recruit from Knoxville who was rated as the No. 107 running back in the nation in the 2023 recruiting class.
Entering spring practice last year, Bishop was viewed as the fourth or fifth option at running back (along with true freshman Peyton Lewis) behind Dylan Sampson, Khalifa Keith, and Cam Seldon.
Bishop, however, ended up finishing second on the team in rushing yards behind Sampson. The 5-foot-10 running back finished the 2024 season with 455 rushing yards (6.1 yards per carry) and three rushing touchdowns.
With Sampson off to the NFL, and Seldon and Keith leaving the program via the NCAA transfer portal, Bishop has a chance to emerge as the Vols' top option at running back in 2025 (Lewis and Duke Blue Devils transfer Star Thomas, along with true freshman Daune Morris, will also compete for carries in UT's backfield).
Bishop may not have been a highly rated recruit coming out of high school, but it's clear that he's going to be a big difference maker for Tennessee in 2025.
