Linebacker Jamien Sherwood is making a lot of money over the past few days. Earlier this week, he signed a three-year, $45 million extension with the New York Jets. And on Wednesday, the rising star defender led the league in performance-based pay, making an extra $1,092,206 on top of what he had earned for the 2024 season.

Performance-based pay

The mechanism was created in the 2002 CBA in a pact between the NFL and NFLPA. It's a fund to supplement salaries of players who earn lower salaries based on playing time. All 32 teams receive an equal share, and players who were on the field the most snaps with the lowest salaries are the ones who benefit from it the most. That explains why Sherwood, a former fifth-round pick who plays almost every snap for the Jets, is so high on the list.

Also, New York doesn't have many other players outplaying their salaries to split their share. Last season, the linebacker played 92.77% of the defensive snaps, plus 26.16% of the special teams snaps. He led the NFL in solo tackles.

Big money

After having a breakout season for the Jets in 2024, Jamien Sherwood signed a three-year extension with the Jets. The new deal includes $30 million in fully guaranteed money, making him the fourth highest-paid off-ball linebacker in the NFL.

The Jets included void years at the end of the contract to lower the initial cap hit, so in Year 1 it will cost the team only $5 million against the salary cap.

A fifth-round pick, Sherwood had only started seven games throughout his first three years in the league. In 2024, though, he started 16 games and had 98 solo tackles, 158 total tackles (10 of them for loss), two sacks, and three passes defended.

His playing time on defense went up from 17% in 2023 to almost 93% in 2024. And that's how important he was for the team.
