The main offseason goal for the Chicago Bears was reconstructing the trenches on both sides of the ball, which included bringing in two top free agent additions to the defensive front.
The signings of Dayo Odeyingbo off the edge and veteran Grady Jarrett on the interior was a strong start toward fortifying the defensive line alongside Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter, and the rest of the room.
On paper, this already looks like a much stronger unit saying that Odeyingbo can reach his full potential in Chicago and Jarrett has more gas left in the tank.
But, the only thing that matter is how this group looks on the field. During the 2024 season, the Bears ranked 16th in sacks and 13th in sack percentage. Not ideal numbers considering the talent the team had on the defensive line.
The good news is, the Bears top pass rushers are already getting familiar with their new pass rushing mates. Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter, Austin Booker, Dayo Odeyingbo, Grady Jarrett, and a few other NFL players were all working out last week with pass rushing specialist Brandon Jordan.
Jordan is the founder of Trench Performance, a company started in 2018 offering "coaching and training opportunities to elite defensive linemen at the high school, college and NFL levels." Jordan has worked with hundreds of athletes over the years.
There was only a short social media clip shared off all the Bears pass rushers honing their techniques, but it's good to see everyone working out together.
A few weeks back, head coach Ben Johnson challenged the pass catchers on the team saying if they aren't getting together now, they'll be behind the game when the offseason program starts just a few days on April 7th.
Clearly, the defensive linemen got that message too and are getting acquainted with each other before the real work begins in Chicago.
Once they get back into the building, everyone will then have to get acquainted with new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett, who together will be in charge of leading this pass rushing unit in 2025.
We'll see if any other additions get made to the DL in the 2025 NFL Draft, but for the time being, this looks like a hungry group eager to get to work.
