After a 17-15 season, the expectation is that the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team will see a decent amount of turnover with their roster.
That has already begun with sophomore C Austin Parks opting to enter the transfer portal. The former three-star recruit was an in-state player who averaged 1.3 points and 0.9 rebounds per game in 15 appearances in 2024. Parks surely isn’t going to be the last Buckeye to hit the portal, either.
However, the Buckeyes are expected to be active in the portal to find upgrades for their roster. One name has already come to the surface that the Buckeyes have been connected to, and it would be a good addition.
According to The Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy, the Buckeyes have shown interest in Iowa F Owen Freeman, who is a 6-foot-10 sophomore who averaged 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 2024.
The big man opted to hit the portal after Iowa moved on from longtime coach Fran McCaffrey. Freeman started 24 games as a freshman in 2023 and recorded 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The talented transfer from Moline, Illinois would give the Buckeyes size that they badly need on the interior.
Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler’s first full season as the head coach didn’t go as planned. Missing the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season is a bad look for the Buckeyes and they need to turn it around quickly. Landing a player like Freeman would help the cause undoubtedly.
Expect Ohio State to show interest in several bigs and land one or two when it is all said and done. Four-star recruit A’Mare Bynum is a talented 6-foot-8 power forward coming in, but the Buckeyes will need experience too.
The transfer portal runs from March 24 until April 22, expect Ohio State to add multiple players from there.
