Brian Kelly is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the LSU Tigers and there's heavy pressure on him to lead the program to at least a College Football Playoff appearance in 2025.

The three coaches that preceded Kelly at LSU — Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron — each won national championships in Baton Rouge.

Kelly left Notre Dame to take over at LSU in part because he believed he'd have a better chance to win a national championship. So far, Kelly hasn't even been able to guide the Tigers to the playoff.

The SEC is as competitive and as deep as ever. So while LSU has a talented roster entering the 2025 season, it'll be an uphill climb to earn a spot in the 12-team playoff.

Based on last season's results, an SEC team almost certainly needs to win 10 regular season games to secure a spot in the playoff.

Earlier this week, CBS Sports predicted how many games each SEC team will win in 2025 and they have LSU coming up just short of winning 10 games.

CBS Sports has the Tigers going 9-3 during the regular season with losses to Clemson, Alabama, and Oklahoma.

From CBS Sports: It's easy to question Kelly's coaching job so far with the Tigers, but that's not the mindset here when all the evidence points to a big season for LSU. The Tigers return the SEC's leading returning passer in Garrett Nussmeier, and will have tremendous weapons around him. LSU signed the nation's No. 1 transfer class, adding eight players from SEC rivals — including dynamic pass rushers Patrick Payton and Jack Pyburn, as well as two ready-made stars at receiver in Nic Anderson and Barion Brown. LSU is replacing four starters along an offensive line that allowed just 15 sacks last season, the best mark in the conference. The schedule looks daunting, but even with losses to the toughest opponents on the road, there's still a clear path to the CFP. We'll call for an early-season coin flip to go LSU's way at Ole Miss after losing the opener to ACC favorite Clemson. Still, this schedule looks more like a 10-win slate than the nine-win mark we're predicting today.

Kelly isn't getting fired if he goes 9-3 and fails to reach the playoff. But the noise will get pretty loud in Baton Rouge if that's how the season plays out. And it wouldn't be a surprise if Kelly, due to how hot his seat will get if he misses the playoff, pursues other opportunities in that scenario (such as Michigan if it happens to come open).
