A Tennessee Vols defender received an impressive preseason honor this week, but it's somewhat bittersweet for UT football fans.

On3 put out their "way too early" 2025 All-American team and Vols cornerback Jermod McCoy was included on the first team.

McCoy, who started his career at Oregon State, proved to be one of the best transfer additions in college football last season as he developed into a shutdown cornerback.

The Texas native, however, tore his ACL in January, putting his status for the 2025 season in doubt.

From On3: McCoy is the perfect example of how the transfer portal can pay dividends. When McCoy transferred to Knoxville from Oregon State before last season, it didn’t move the needle. Then he went on to be one of the best cornerbacks in the country, finishing the year with four interceptions. Though there is some concern about how he’ll bounce-back from a torn ACL in January, it’s hard to bet against him.

Tennessee is hoping that McCoy will be able to return to action at some point in 2025, but it's impossible to put a timetable on when he will be able to play in games. Every ACL recovery is different, and there can be unexpected setbacks, so while there's certainly hope that McCoy will be able to help Tennessee in the fall, there's no guarantee that he'll play for the Volunteers in 2025.

The Vols have high hopes for the 2025 season as they look to reach the College Football Playoff for a second straight season. Losing McCoy for an undetermined amount of time doesn't change those high hopes, but it'll definitely make Tennessee's path to reaching their ultimate goal a bit bumpier than expected.
