That national sports media outlet made the "daring" prediction this week that Carnell Tate will lead Ohio State in receiving in 2025 instead of Jeremiah Smith.
From 247Sports: The difference in yardage and touchdowns between these two last season was significant, but that changes in 2025 when Carnell Tate goes from option No. 3 in the Buckeyes' passing attack to co-lead with preseason Heisman candidate Jeremiah Smith. With Emeka Egbuka off to the NFL, that means greater influence on the game plan for Tate. There's going to be so much focus from opposing defensive coordinators on Smith that Tate will shine with enhanced opportunities. Expect both of these elite wideouts to surpass 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns, but Tate will be Ohio State's breakout performer.
I think Tate is a great player with a very bright future. And I think he's going to have a huge season for the Buckeyes with Emeka Egbuka off to the NFL.
But Smith might be a future Hall of Famer. The word "generational" gets thrown around a bit too much these days, but Smith is truly a generational player. And he's going to enter the 2025 season with year of collegiate experience — something he obviously didn't have as a true freshman last year.
There's no doubt that Smith will command extra attention from opposing defenses, but I'm not sure that's going to matter. I don't think there's a cornerback in college football that can consistently defend Smith.
I mean, just look at the play below against Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
That's pretty good coverage from the Vols cornerback and it didn't matter. Smith still made an incredible play and put six points on the board.
Smith should be even better in 2025 than he was in 2024 (as long as he stays hungry, and there's no reason to think that he won't). I'm not betting against the best wide receiver in the sport.
