Super Bowl LIX will be the seventh appearance for the Kansas City Chiefs in the big game. Throughout history, the Chiefs are 4-2 in Super Bowls dating back to the first tone.
Even with their storied history, this one is special. With a win, the Chiefs will become the first team in National Football League history to win three consecutive Vince Lombardi Trophies.
Let's take a look at the previous six Super Bowls that the Chiefs played in and how they went down.
Super Bowl I
Date: January 15th, 1967
Result: Green Bay Packers 35 – Kansas City Chiefs 10
The first-ever meeting between AFL and NFL teams was in the first Super Bowl and the Chiefs got run out of the building by Vince Lombardi's Packers. Max McGee caught the first-ever touchdown in a Super Bowl with an excellent one-handed catch.
Super Bowl IV
Date: January 11th, 1970
Result: Kansas City Chiefs 23 – Minnesota Vikings 7
The final ever game of the AFL was Super Bowl IV with the Chiefs being two-touchdown underdogs to the Purple People Eaters of the Vikings. The Chiefs got their first Super Bowl win in a game that wasn't as close as the score might indicate. We also got the infamous picture of Len Dawson smoking a cigar after this game.
Super Bowl LIV
Date: February 2nd, 2020
Result: Kansas City Chiefs 31 – San Francisco 49ers 20
This was the beginning of the legend that is Patrick Mahomes. Down 20-10 in the fourth quarter, Mahomes rattled off 21 consecutive points to get the win. This game almost went a different way, as Jimmy Garoppolo's dep ball nearly hit Emmanuel Sanders for the game-winning touchdown late.
Super Bowl LV
Date: February 7th, 2021
Result: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, Kansas City Chiefs 9
This is arguably the most important singular game of the Chiefs' dynasty. In the pandemic game, the Buccaneers played in their home stadium. The Buccaneers' offense, led by Tom Brady, destroyed the Chiefs' defense, but it was the massive injuries to the offensive line that got Andy Reid and Brett Veach to completely shift how they structure their roster. This loss arguably set up their potential three-peat.
Super Bowl LVII
Date: February 12, 2023
Result: Kansas City Chiefs 38 – Philadelphia Eagles 35
In a fantastic back-and-forth game, the Eagles and Chiefs traded blows against each other. It was a classic game where the loser had the most points in Super Bowl history with 35. The Chiefs' creative play design in the red zone is what separated them from the rest of the field.
Super Bowl LVIII
Date: February 11, 2024
Result: Kansas Chiefs 25 – San Francisco 49ers 22
This was just the second time in Super Bowl history that a game went to overtime. The Chiefs stopped the 49ers on third down during their first possession, allowing Mecole Hardman to catch the game-winning touchdown on the next possession.
