The Tennessee Volunteers proved in 2024 just how important it is to their offense to have a special talent at the running back position. They're hoping to potentially find another one this recruiting cycle in the Peach State, and they're making good ground in his recruitment.
Four-star running back Jonaz Walton from Carrollton, Georgia has Tennessee among his top 10 schools, and it appears Josh Heupel and his staff have made quite the impression on him recently.
Walton lists Tennessee, Alabama, Notre Dame and Florida as the four that would be the hardest to say no to, per Steve Wiltfong of On3 Sports, based upon the relationships he's built with their respective coaching staffs. As such, Heupel will be working not just to land the talented runner but perhaps to avoid having to face him down the road in a rivalry clash.
Tennessee's running back usage is certainly one that should be intriguing to RB prospects right now. Jaylen Wright made a name for himself in 2023 with a 1000-yard season that resulted in getting drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round last April.
Heupel switched from a committee approach to a lead back philosophy in 2024, handing the reins of the offense to Dylan Sampson. The junior running back turned in one of the best seasons the program has ever seen, setting school records for rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns as well as finishing fifth on the all-time SEC rushing touchdowns chart. Sampson will surely see his name pop up on the screen during the NFL Draft.
Per Wiltfong, Sampson's season last year is something that caught Walton's attention in his recruitment.
We'll see if Heupel can find a way to get Walton on campus this offseason and show him how he can be the next running back to find success in Knoxville on the way to the NFL.
