Everything to know about potential trades for WRs Cooper Kupp, Deebo Samuel

With the 2024 NFL season now officially in the books, teams are moving on to constructing their rosters for 2025. Before we get to free agency, which believe it or not is less than one month away, players are being put on the trade block. This past week we’ve learned that a pair of big name WRs — Cooper Kupp and Deebo Samuel — could soon be on the move.

Rams seeking a trade for Kupp; what we know: Kupp released a statement last week that Los Angeles has informed him he will be traded if it can find a suitable deal. The 2021 Offensive Player of the Year is due $20 million in 2025, but he has missed 11 games due to numerous injuries over the past two seasons. The Rams have decided that their returns from Kupp haven’t been worth their investment in him, and they are comfortable with Puka Nacua as their top WR. As for replacing Kupp, former All-Pro Davante Adams has expressed interest in joining the team.

Matthew Stafford not happy with the decision: The veteran quarterback is understandably upset with potentially losing one of his top weapons. His frustration led him to the point where he was questioning his own future with the franchise, however the Rams have not expressed any plans to trade Stafford.

Potential destinations for Kupp: The Detroit Lions appear to be the early favorites to land Kupp. Adding him to an already lethal Lions offense would be a scary thought for the rest of the NFL. The New England Patriots could also be a team to watch as they desperately need a playmaker for young QB Drake Maye. The Minnesota Vikings are an intriguing option as well, especially if they move forward with J.J. McCarthy at QB. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, and Dallas Cowboys could enter the Kupp sweepstakes too.

Deebo Samuel on the move from San Francisco; what we know: Unlike Kupp, Samuel requested to be traded from the 49ers. Samuel admitted that it was a tough conversation to have, but he feels like parting ways with the Niners will be the best thing for his career. Samuel is due a $15.4 million bonus by March 22, so San Francisco doesn’t have long to get a deal done. If the Niners can’t find a trade that they’re comfortable with, they could designate Samuel as a post-June 1 cut to ease the financial burden.

Parting ways with Samuel is best for the Niners, too: With the savings it would get by trading Samuel, San Francisco could make some other big moves, such as extending star tight end George Kittle, trading for defensive end Myles Garrett, or bringing in Davante Adams.

Potential destinations for Samuel: Nothing has been confirmed yet, but our A to Z Sports writers have made cases for the Patriots, Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Kansas City Chiefs.

Chiefs star TE Travis Kelce mulling over retirement

Reports began surfacing the night before Super Bowl LIX that Kelce is considering calling it a career. Some thought that he may go for one more year considering the Chiefs were blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles in the big game, but Kelce confirmed on his “New Heights” podcast that he is still weighing his options.

Kelce details his dilemma: Kelce went into detail about the toll that playing football has taken on him, especially as of late with the Chiefs continually making deep postseason runs.

Jason Kelce weighs in: Travis’ brother Jason, who just retired last offseason, understands exactly what Travis is going through, and got emotional while talking about it.

Travis has a soft deadline to make his decision: The Chiefs would probably appreciate a decision from Kelce by March 15 so that they can save $11.5 million in salary cap space.

NFL insider does some digging: James Palmer of Bleacher Report said that people within the Chiefs organization told him they feel like Kelce really will retire.
