It's important that whoever the Las Vegas Raiders hire as their head coach or even the coordinator position, has an understanding of what the Raiders are, what they mean to the history of the NFL, and what they mean to the cities of Los Angeles, Oakland, and Las Vegas. You have to have a special appreciation for it all, and Pete Carroll does.
And he brought on people who also do, like defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who has been with the franchise for some time now, and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who's been in the NFL as a head coach before with the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. The two understand what they are trying to accomplish, and the magnitude of turning the franchise around.
When Champ Kelly was hired, he was asked if he understood the history and culture, and if he was familiar with it all. He already knew all too well.
"I had an opportunity to coach Howie Long's son, Kyle Long, when I was at Oregon, and got to know Howie and Diane and their family really, really well," Kelly said when asked if he's familiar with the history of the Raiders. "And to just listen to Howie talk about his experience as a player and what it meant to him being an East Coast guy coming out of the Boston area playing at Villanova and then coming to the West Coast to play for the Raiders.
"And the history and the tradition of this program speaks for itself. To the catch phrases that I think everybody uses in everyday life, 'Just win, baby,' and on to some of the things that Al Davis himself and the imprint that he had on this league is special. So, it's one of the iconic franchises, and really fortunate to be here."
This whole rebuild thing won't work if you don't have coaches who appreciate the history and what was before them. The Raiders don't have to worry about any of that.
Las Vegas Raiders are expected to hire another staff member that is very familiar with how Chip Kelly likes things done
The Raiders are almost done with their staff.
