September is the busiest time of year at the Truman Sports Complex.

That is, of course, home to the Kansas City Chiefs' GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and the Kansas City Royals' Kauffman Stadium. The two teams don't typically schedule home games during the same day, and there's really no reason to believe that will change this year.

The Royals' final home game is set to take place on Sunday, September 21. With that in mind, let's take a look at all the ways their schedule could impact the Chiefs' first month of play.

Chiefs' Week 1 options

The first variable to this is one that neither the Chiefs or Royals can control. It has been heavily speculated that the Chiefs' Week 1 matchup will be against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil. Last year's game in Brazil took place on a Friday, the day after the NFL season opener.

Assuming that's the plan again this year, Kansas City would play on Friday, September 5. If somehow those plans fall through and the Chargers play another team, there are a couple of different ways the NFL could go with the Chiefs in Week 1:

  • Chiefs play an away game on Sunday, September 7, as the Royals are set to host a home game on that day.
  • Chiefs play a home game on Monday night, September 8, with the Royals set to begin a road trip on that day. The Chiefs could also be the away team on Monday Night Football.

Chiefs' Week 2 options

With the Royals set to be out of town, the Chiefs could play on Thursday Night Football in Week 2, which would take place on September 11. However, if they end playing playing the Chargers in Brazil the week before, it's highly unlikely that they would play on Thursday in Week 2.

The easiest scenario here is that the Chiefs play at home on Sunday, September 14 with the Royals still being out on the road. Monday night (Sept. 15) is also an option yet again as the Royals are scheduled to have an off day.

Chiefs' Week 3 options

A Thursday Night Football or Sunday home game is pretty much out of the question during this week with the Royals playing home games on both days. Either the Chiefs play on the road, or on Monday night (Sept. 22) with the Royals scheduled to have another day off.

Beware of October

Unfortunately, the Chiefs and Royals haven't had to deal with both teams still playing in October very often due to the latter's lack of success. However, they did last year as the Royals reached the postseason for the first time since 2015, and they very well could do it again this year.

If they do, the MLB would try its best not to schedule a Royals' home game on the same day as when the Chiefs have one, but it's possible that it can't be avoided. The Chiefs and Royals last played home games in the same day on September 13, 2010. Last year the Chiefs hosted a Monday Night Football game at Arrowhead during the same time that the Royals played a playoff game in New York against the Yankees.
