The Allstate Sugar Bowl was scheduled to kick off on Wednesday night at the Ceasar's Superdome in New Orleans, however, people in the area are being asked to shelter in place until further notice following a horrific event that happened on Bourbon Street earlier this morning.
According to several reports, an armed man drove his truck into a crowd of people in New Orleans' popular French Quarter around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday following a New Year's Eve celebration. Reports say the man killed at least 10 people and injured at least 26 others before police shot him down.
The FBI is investigating the situation as an "act of terror" and searching for possible explosives in the area.
UGA's Athletic Association released a statement Wednesday afternoon to confirm Bulldogs players and personnel have been marked safe.
“We are deeply saddened by the senseless violence that occurred in New Orleans," the official statement read. "All team personnel and members of the official team travel party have been accounted for. Currently, we are in contact with local law enforcement as well as representatives from the Sugar Bowl and College Football Playoff and are continuing to gather more information. Our prayers are with all those who traveled here for the Sugar Bowl and entire New Orleans community.”
The names of the victims and those injured have not yet been released to the public.
