Georgia head coach Kirby Smart made it very clear how he feels about offensive coordinator Mike Bobo going into the 2026 season
Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart made it very clear how he feels about his offensive coordinator going into the 2026 season.
There aren’t many coaches in college football that have been criticized more over the last couple of years than Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
Bobo, a former Georgia quarterback, took over as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator in 2023 after Todd Monken left for the NFL.
In 2022, the Bulldogs had the No. 5 scoring offense in the nation.
Georgia again had the No. 5 scoring offense in the nation in 2023 under Bobo. In 2024, however, Georgia had the No. 38 scoring offense. Last season, Georgia finished with the No. 28 scoring offense.
Despite the downward trend, and complaints from fans, UGA head coach Kirby Smart made it clear this week at SEC Media Days in Tampa that he believes the program has the right offensive coordinator.
“I look at things through facts, and I look at things through what I see with my own two eyes,” said Smart when asked about Bobo. “I was blessed to work for the greatest college football coach (Nick Saban) in the history of college football, and I don’t even think it’s arguable. I don’t think you can even debate it. But I learned from him that you evaluate things from inside out. And I do think football intuition is one of my strengths.
“And knowing that, I know we’ve got the right offensive coordinator. What you guys want to write and talk about is completely up to you. Because I look at the production he’s had, the success he’s had, the team success — where he doesn’t worry about stats, he worries about winning football games. And the way he coaches our players day to day is unmatched in this country.”
Offensive production is always going to go up and down based on personnel. The Bulldogs had some future NFL stars on the roster — such as tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Ladd McConkey — before the downward trend started. Those guys were special and tough to replace.
It doesn’t sound like Bobo is on the hot seat at all, so fans and media can quit wondering if Smart is considering a change anytime soon.
