The quarterback position is once again going to take over the offseason discussion about the Minnesota Vikings. Will they keep quarterback Sam Darnold for the long term or shift to J.J. McCarthy who was selected at 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The last two games for Darnold did not inspire confidence in what he is going to be moving forward, but the first 16 games inspired a lot of confidence. With McCarthy in tow behind him, that could be a big factor in the decision.

J.J. McCarthy is throwing

During his end-of-the-season press conference, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked about McCarthy's recovery and he gave a very positive response.

"He's on the field, throwing and training. I try and go get a walk in before I talk to you guys. So I don't talk as quickly, you know. So people tell me I talk a little quick sometimes. So I was in there, and he was actually in there doing some, you know, those cool quarterback thrusty things that Dak does. You know, with weights, he was in there doing them. He looks great. He's excited. You know, you talk about a kid who's just obsessed with football and loves being around the game. So we're excited about what we have in him."

McCarthy's being healthy enough to be back on the field, both throwing and doing drills after having a second procedure back in November, is a great step forward for his recovery. McCarthy should be easily ready for training camp and likely for OTAs in May.

The rest of Adofo-Mensah's press conference expressed a lot of confidence in both McCarthy and Darnold without giving an answer on who they will be moving forward with in the 2025 season, but this update is certainly that of a positive nation.
