Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo is proving to be one of the hottest head-coaching candidates for the 2025 cycle. This is no surprise to K.C. and its coaching staff, who know just how valuable Spags has been to the team over the years.
The Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets had already requested interviews with Spags, who completed his interview with NY on Wednesday evening. Now, a third AFC team has requested an interview with Spagnuolo, which might be the best opportunity for the veteran defensive coordinator.
According to multiple reports, Spagnuolo has received a request from the Jacksonville Jaguars, who just fired former Chiefs assistant head coach Doug Pederson.
This might be the best opportunity for Spags out of the three teams that have requested an interview. Why's that the case? Well, they have an established quarterback in place, Trevor Lawrence, for whom he has a lot of respect.
“He gets better and better," Spagnuolo said in September of 2023. "(Jaguars Head Coach) Doug (Pederson) does a great job with him. The thing that always stands out, and this stood out when we played – he’s huge. He’s big, he’s a big strong quarterback that can run. I showed a clip this morning (where) he runs, he didn’t slide, he’s running over people. He’s in the pocket, people get around him, and he’s getting out. He’s just a big strong guy that can throw the football. I just see a really – I thought he was great when he was in college and knew he’d be a good player. He just looks like he gets more and more confident.”
Beyond the quarterback position, which is the most important in football, the Jaguars have some very good defensive players—Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, for instance—with whom he'd certainly love to work.
The clear downside to this job is that he'd have to work alongside Trent Baalke, the veteran general manager who appears to be safe in his job and doesn't have a sterling reputation.
