It was a game for the ages between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Penn State Nittany Lions on Thursday night. Notre Dame was able to come away with a 27-24 victory in the semifinal matchup, advancing to the national championship game. While the contest wasn't always pretty, this Irish team persevered through the ups and downs, and eventually got it done. The word of the night was resiliency.
After some early struggles, Notre Dame came out of the locker room and put together a tremendous second half to seal the victory. This has been a team that has adopted the demeanor of head coach Marcus Freeman. You can see the swagger they play with, the attitude, and the slight disposition. That has carried over to players all across the roster, including star running Jeremiyah Love.
Following the contest, the sophomore standout had some choice words for the Nittany Lions. He was even nice enough to offer a new nickname for Penn State.
"We went out and played like the dogs that we are. We ain’t no little dogs, we’re big dogs. They was the little dogs today. Little cats. Whatever you want to call them."
This was obviously a funny little moment for Love, who continued to do everything he could to help his team, even while nursing a knee injury. Love ended the day with 45 yards rushing and a touchdown. That rushing score was one of the biggest plays of the day, refusing to be held short of the goal line. In a lot of ways, that one play symbolized the day for the Irish. They just were not going to give up.
I'm not sure that Penn State will take Love's suggestion and change their names to the "Little Cats", but it was yet another great example of the personality this team has. They will be the underdog in the national championship against either Ohio State or Texas, but one thing is certain, they will not come into that contest without the deepest desire to win. This team is young and confident, which makes them very dangerous.
