It turns out that the Georgia Bulldogs were never entirely done with quarterback Carson Beck, after all.

But rather Beck was done with them.

USA Today's Matt Hayes reported Wednesday morning that Georgia was the first school that reached out to Beck when he announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

"A person close to Beck’s decision making, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the process, told USA TODAY Sports that not only was Georgia at the front of the line for Beck – who has been eviscerated by Georgia fans on social media since the Bulldogs’ early exit from the College Football Playoff – but SEC heavyweight Alabama was next to call," Hayes wrote.

Beck ultimately chose to follow his girlfriend to the Miami Hurricanes and collected a $4 million NIL check along the way.

Now one has to wonder why head coach Kirby Smart wanted Beck to return when they're expected to have Gunner Stockton take over the QB1 job in 2025.

But there's only one answer, and it's not one any Georgia fan wants to hear: Smart may not only have an overall lack of confidence in Stockton but also in the guys behind him.

After Stockton, the Bulldogs have Ryan Puglisi as the most experienced backup on the roster, though he has yet to throw a pass in a game for Georgia.

Georgia also has incoming freshmen Ryan Montgomery and Hezekiah Millender in the 2025 cycle, but there is a possibility that Montgomery's knee injury could have him sidelined throughout spring practice.

Georgia caught a glimpse of Stockton in the SEC Championship and another one in his first career start in the team's 23-10 Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame.

Smart appeared pleased with Stockton's performance in the loss after the sophomore quarterback completed 20 of his 32 pass attempts for 234 yards and a touchdown. However, coach Smart did admit that Stockton could have done more.
