Last week, Dre Greenlaw played his first San Francisco 49ers game since tearing his Achilles in Super Bowl 58 in February.
Though the 49ers wound up losing 12-6, a setback that all but ended their playoff hopes, Greenlaw's long-awaited return was reason to celebrate in a hugely disappointing season.
The problem now is that Greenlaw may only have three more games left as a 49er.
Greenlaw is an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and the impressive performance he produced before leaving the game in the third quarter, one which gave life to a defense that has too often lacked spark without him this year, underlined why the 49ers should have re-signing him near the top of their to-do list.
But when asked about his free agency on KNBR on Tuesday, Greenlaw offered no reassurance that he would be back.
"Honestly, I'm not thinking about all of the free agency stuff," Greenlaw admitted. "I'm just thinking about three games that I got left with my teammates. At the end of the day, I'm probably going to be a free agent regardless, so I'm not trying to rush the process of being a free agent.
"I got three games left to enjoy with [LB] Fred [Warner], and [DE Nick] Bosa, and [QB Brock] Purdy, and all those guys, so when that time comes, I can't stop it. I can't do nothing about it. All I could do is just enjoy these three games."
Greenlaw's comments suggest he is not expecting to reach an agreement on a new deal with the 49ers before the start of the new league year. Should he impress across the Niners' final three regular-season games, he will likely have a robust market in free agency even with his recent injury history.
Despite leaving the Rams game early, his exit prompting a saga that overshadowed events on the field as De'Vondre Campbell refused to go in for Greenlaw and was subsequently suspended, the 49ers' 2019 fifth-round pick has no doubt he will be able to suit up against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
"My knee was a little off, a little tweaky," Greenlaw said. "I feel better this week. Luckily, we had a few extra days [off], so I definitely feel better this week.
"Just doing everything I can to make sure I can go Sunday. I should be up. No doubt, should be able to go Sunday."
