Notre Dame football is gearing up for their first round playoff matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers next Friday. Amidst all that madness, the NCAA Transfer Portal also opened up this week. While the Irish staff is focused on their hunt for a national championship, they are also doing their homework on transfer portal targets internally.

One wide receiver who entered recently that should be on the Notre Dame radar is Cal pass catcher Nyziah Hunter. The redshirt freshman is coming off a tremendous year for the Golden Bears, leading the team with 578 yards and five touchdowns on 40 receptions, averaging 14.5 yards per reception.

At 6-2 and 210 pounds, Hunter is a big-bodied boundary receiver that they should have huge interest in this offseason. With Beaux Collins gone after this season, and uncertainty about whether Jayden Thomas will return in 2025, the depth chart will be in major flux. It will be left to youngsters like Micah Gilbert to take a step forward, but adding to that room is essential.

A native of Salinas, California, Hunter was originally a member of the 2023 recruiting class. A four-star recruit at the time, he opted for Cal over offers from Washington, Oregon State, BYU, and Boise State among others. Hunter has three years of eligibility remaining, making him an extremely appealing portal option for any prospective school.

Since Hunter entered the portal, he has received a ton of attention. Schools such as Oklahoma, Nebraska, Washington, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Utah, Arizona State, Syracuse, Kansas, and ECU have all extended offers. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Notre Dame also doing so at some point.

Unlike last offseason, the Irish staff can be a lot more selective on wide receiver targets. They do not need a high volume of additions, but one or two legitimate pass catchers to add to guide a young group. Hunter, on the surface, feels like the perfect candidate to add.
