The San Francisco 49ers aren't quite eliminated from playoff contention, but the oddsmakers expect that to happen in Week 16.
San Francisco must win out to have any shot of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to reach the postseason after dropping to 6-8 with defeat to the Los Angeles Rams last Thursday.
But they are underdogs to pull out the victory on the road against the Miami Dolphins in Week 16.
The Dolphins, per OddsTrader, opened as 2.5-point favorites despite themselves dropping to 6-8 with a loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.
San Francisco is 5-9 against the spread this season and 0-2 as an underdog, per Team Rankings.
Should that trend continue this week, the 49ers will be eliminated, and San Francisco could still see its playoffs hopes end even with a victory in Miami.
Indeed, if the Rams and Washington Commanders both win, then the 49ers will be officially playing out the string regardless of the outcome at Hard Rock Stadium.
History is also against the 49ers keeping their season alive with victory.
Though the 49ers won their last meeting with the Dolphins in 2022, they have not defeated them in Miami since 1995, when Elvis Grbac threw four touchdowns in a 44-20 victory.
San Francisco went on to finish 11-5 and win the NFC West in that season. The 49ers' hopes of earning a similar record this year have vanished, and ending a 29-year wait for a road win in Miami may only delay the inevitable as far as their elimination from the playoff race.
