It has been a wild ride for quarterback Zach Calzada, who has been playfully nicknamed the Cuban Missile over the last couple of college seasons. Calzada was a notable recruit in the 2019 class, deciding on Texas A&M over offers from Georgia, Tennessee, Louisville, UNC, Iowa, NC State, Maryland, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State, and Cincinnati among many others.
Following a couple of years with the Aggies, and an epic upset of Alabama, Calzada spent a season with the Auburn Tigers but didn’t see game action after suffering a shoulder injury. The Georgia native eventually landed on his feet, transferring to FCS Incarnate Word prior to the 2023 season.
During his two years on the FCS level, Calzada was tremendous. He threw for 6,144 yards and 53 touchdowns. Calzada also added another 382 yards on the ground and 10 more scores, while completing 66 percent of his passes.
Having already played six years in college, it appears that Calzada has one more remaining, most likely due to a past injury. Not only is he planning on returning, but he will also be eyeing a new program to play for. Calzada entered the transfer portal on Monday, and his next destination will be his fourth school in the last five seasons.
It’s a slightly controversial entree considering Calzada gave an emotional postgame speech following the team’s playoff loss to South Dakota State this past weekend, in which he thanked Incarnate Word and said he wouldn’t want to play for any other coach other than Clint Killough. Unless Coach Killough is taking a new job, and bringing Calzada with him, it appears that he will indeed play for a new college coach in 2025.
There is no telling what the market will be for Calzada. The 6-4, 200-pound signal caller does have some natural gifts, but he’s an older player who really has only had a lot of success on the FCS level. He will be an intriguing player to monitor.

Notre Dame needs more speed at wide receiver, and some serious juice just entered the portal.
