With the Minnesota Vikings dealing with an injury to cornerback Stephon Gilmore, there was some discussion about whether or not they would add a cornerback to the roster.
On Wednesday, the Vikings filled their practice squad with cornerback Kelvin Joseph.
On Monday, head coach Kevin O'Connell was asked about the potential of bringing in a cornerback to fortify the position and he was non-commital about it.
"I think we'll kind of cross that bridge as we go here. Knowing that we've got Nudie [Dwight McGlothern] on the practice squad. I should say Dwight McGlothern. We've got him at any point in time that we've had. Clearly, we have a lot of confidence in not only in the present, but I think he's going to be a heck of a player moving into the future. We'll see if it's him or if there's possibly another name or a player out there that we think gives us a chance to possibly come in here and have a chance to have an impact. I don't know at this time if it's going to be a roster spot worthy. I don't believe it's going to be a roster spot kind of conversation where the short-term IR [injury reserve] would be a conversation. More than likely, we'll work through that here in the next couple of days."
Bringing in a cornerback with plus size and athleticism to the practice squad is a low risk move that is a smart one to make. Was it a good move to bring in Joseph? Well, that's an entirely different question.
Joseph was the 44th overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2021 NFL Draft and he only played two seasons with the team. They traded him to the Miami Dolphins for Noah Igbinoghene. He only played in four games with the Dolphins before moving on to the Seattle Seahawks for one game in 2023 and the Indianapolis Colts for two games this season.
Overall, Joseph has played in 33 games with 351 snaps on defense. However, Joseph has just 21 snaps on defense over the last two years.
Even if he doesn't do anything for the Vikings, his nickname of Bossman Fat will immediately become one of the best on the team.
